Analysis of Updated NDC
Timeframe

2021 to 2030, with goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050

Relevant context

Small Island Developing State with high vulnerability to climate change

Process for developing NDC

The Climate Change and International Cooperation Division (CCICD) of the Ministry of Economy the lead agency tasked with preparing and submitting Fiji's first NDC. The CCICD is guided by the National Climate Change Policy, and for the first NDC, it collaborated with relevant government agencies, non-governmental agencies and development partners. No specific process is described for this update.

Description of Monitoring and/or Implementation Mechanism

Fiji is currently reviewing its previously developed strategies and roadmaps. This process includes the conduct of consultations, with industry stakeholders, academic experts, local NGO groups, and technical consultants. The documents under review include the NDC Implementation Roadmap, Low Emission Development Strategy, and National Adaptation Plan. Fiji is also currently finalizing its NDC Investment Plan and Projects Pipeline, Technology Needs Assessment, and its SDG7 Roadmap, and is further reviewing its Energy Policy.

Summary of gender reference

Gender was explicitly considered in Fiji’s NDC planning process, following the principle of gender-responsiveness, as articulated in Fiji’s National Climate Change Policy. This policy integrates gender issues by: 1) ensuring that gender is considered in all adaptation and mitigation approaches and methods; 2) supporting gender-balance in decision making processes; 3) promoting gender-equitable benefits; and 4) ensuring that gender is a vital consideration in programming finance and capacity-building activities.

Additionally, gender targeted interventions are included in Fiji’s Climate Vulnerability Assessment, which forms part of its adaptation component.

Finally, Fiji further commits to "take appropriate steps to protect its social infrastructure against climate change, prioritizing gender, the disabled, and the needs of children and the elderly in disaster management and climate action."
