Process for developing NDC

In 2020, Iceland announced that it would increase its level of ambition in its NDC targets. The Parliament’s standing Committee for Environment and Communication was consulted in the planning process before this announcement, and subsequent formal decision by the government.

Description of Monitoring and/or Implementation Mechanism

An updated national Climate Action Plan was published in June 2020 which assists in implementing this NDC. This plan included 48 mitigation actions across different sectors, all aimed toward meeting the commitments on net emissions reduction.

Summary of gender reference

In the annex with more details on the NDC, Iceland reports that its NDC was prepared “in the context of commitments to gender equality and cross-cutting priorities and sustainable development.” Under the section on contextual aspirations, Iceland highlighted the equal rights provisions in its Constitution and its "Act on equal gender rights and gender equality No. 150/2020," which seeks to "prevent gender discrimination and to create and maintain equal rights and opportunities for all genders in all aspects of the community."
